An Outdoor Fireplace

The fireplace creates a strong year-round focal point, enjoyed both from within the garden and from the adjoining living space. A contrasting paved hearth draws the eye through the courtyard grounding the outdoor fireplace and giving this garden moment a sense of arrival.

Bespoke Feature Wall

The bespoke slatted wall partially screens the garden from the entrance, offering glimpses of the space beyond rather than revealing everything all at once. Creating a an arrival moment in this compact space, drawing visitors into the courtyard before opening up the full view.

Corten steel introduces a subtle industrial quality and sits naturally within the darker palette. Its weathered tones pick up the warmth of the existing brickwork, the seasonal colour within the planting and, beyond the boundary, the autumn foliage of a neighbouring beech tree.

The greatest challenge was the garden’s scale. At points, the space is less than 3.5 metres wide, yet it needed to accommodate seating, dining and cooking without feeling crowded. Careful planning allowed each function to sit comfortably within the garden, lighting extends the use of this precious space, while a bespoke shed provides essential storage. Additional planning permission was secured for a higher ridge line, making the most of the limited footprint.

Evergreen foliage brings texture and structure throughout the year, creating a fresh contrast against the deeper tones of the hard landscaping. The planting softens the courtyard, heightens its sense of enclosure and gives the garden a natural drama of its own.
